BUSH RE-SHAPING & TREE REDUCING
When a tree outgrows its space, gardeners must decide if it is worth reducing it in size. This is usually achieved through pruning, but it can be hard work and expensive. The alternative is to replace the tree with one to suit the space, but this is not always practical. This leaves tree reducing or re-shaping as excellent options to protect trees and bushes for the long-term.
WHY SHOULD I REDUCE OR RESHAPE TREES OR BUSHES?
There are lots of reasons why you might want to reduce or reshape trees or bushes. A key reason i safety. Trees or bushes are often reduced or reshaped to remove dead wood before it falls off and causes injures or damages people and property.
Additionally, reshaping trees or bushes can be a great idea when you are thinking of reducing the likelihood of them falling over in high winds.
By re-shaping trees or bushes into custom styles can enhance the visual appeal of the tree, by removing branching. If a tree outgrows its natural area, you may want to make a tree smaller. If you want to let more light into the forest floor, you can also remove branches so that more light travels through a tree and to get rid of diseased limbs.
HOW CAN I REDUCE OR RESHAPE TREES OR BUSHES?
There are several different techniques that tree surgeons use to alter or reduce trees, including:
• PRUNING: One of the least severe forms of tree reduction and reshaping. Pruning is a good way to make a tree slightly smaller, reducing its wind resistance and removing diseased or damaged wood.
• CROWN REDUCTION: Crown reduction is when you remove around 30% from the outside of a tree. This is usually done to reduce the height and/or spread of a tree that has become too big.
• RESHAPING: Reshaping generally refers to altering the shape of a tree in some way. It’s also a way to reduce a tree’s size, so is often referred to as crown reduction.
• POLLARDING: You may have heard pollarding described as an extreme form of pruning. This involves cutting the main branches relatively close to the stem, usually to reduce the tree’s size.
• CROWN LIFTING AND THINNING: Crown lifting or raising is when you remove a tree’s lower branches to make more space underneath it. The term crown thinning refers to when you remove up to 30% of branches from all parts of the tree to reduce its density.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF BUSH RESHAPING AND TREE REDUCING?
• Reducing or reshaping can help you create the shape you want for your trees or bushes, encouraging them to grow in a particular direction or grow healthier than before.
• An opportunity to remove deadwood from the plant while controlling the growth, minimising the risks of dead branches causing damage by falling.
• Pruning can also prevent pests from spreading by reducing the density of the crown and stopping overcrowded branches from rubbing up against each other.
• Reducing or reshaping trees c can actually encourage new growth, leading to healthier flowering while strengthening the existing branches.
